Good option for State Compliant Rifles(09.01.2015)
I have this item installed on a Windham Weaponry SRC (NJ Compliant Model). As my rifle is a NJ compliant model, it does not have a bayonet lug and the Harris # 5 seemed like a good option to mount a bipod.
My rifle has standard hand guards with the double heatshield. On a carbine model, this adds a little extra work to the install because of the location of tabs within the hand guard.. Once the hand guards are removed, the inner heat shield musr be pulled out from the tabs inside with a pair of needle mose pliers. The outer heat shield should not be removed. There are tabs inside of the heat shield that are in the way of the harris adaptor. There are 6 in total, but only the ones at the end are of concern. The ones near the end that are in the way of the adaptor. They should not be in the way on a rifle length hand guard. The tabs need to be cut with wire cutters. This leaves two small buttons that must be filed or removed with a dremmel tool or the inner heat shield can't be reinstalled. Once the buttons are removed the adaptor will fit flush and appears to be of the same thickness as those buttons. The adaptor should be installed in the second hole on a carbine and third if you have a rifle. The outer plate should be installed and the stud tightened. a drop of blue loctite on the stuf threads would seem wise. At this point the inner heat shield may be reninstalled and the 4 remaining tabs seem to hold it correctly.
I have not yet shot the rifle since installing this adaptor. The adaptor is not intrisive in any way and only adds a sling swivel to the handguard. With the bipod installed, it seems very solid. Only firing enough rounds and time will tell , but this does seem to be a good solution for state compliant rifles without a bayonet lug or bottom rail to use a bipod.
